Upon graduating in 2007 with a bachelor's in industrial engineering, Kapil joined ABB through a campus placement. His career progression within the company has been nothing short of remarkable. Having contributed significantly over 15 years, from being a management trainee to becoming the Functional head of Advance Manufacturing Engineering, Kapil’s journey within the company depicts his triumph over challenges and his unwavering commitment towards personal and professional growth.

“During my training period, my lead gave me a tough problem to solve. I did not have any prior professional experience and was confused when he delegated that task to me. But he reassured me, guided me, and gave me the freedom to explore and come up with creative out-of-the-box solutions.” This experience had a profound impact on Kapil, as it shaped his approach to problem-solving and instilled a sense of confidence within himself. He learned the value of taking calculated risks and the rewards that they bring. “ABB fostered an environment of openness, support, and recognition, fueling my enthusiasm and encouraging continuous growth.”

In 2004, ABB's MOLM division began in India with technology transferred from Finland. At the start, only a small number of machines were produced in a month. The division expanded in 2004, and later in 2010, where two larger factories were built to manufacture heavy motors and generators. High voltage generators and motors ranging from 440 to 13,000 volts and a power capacity of up to 12 megawatts were produced, and machine production grew from 15 to 200 units per month by 2023.

Kapil had the valuable opportunity to visit ABB China for a two-week period, during which he gained insights into innovative manufacturing lines. The incorporation of practices from Finland and China into operations in India has played a pivotal role in achieving remarkable accomplishments. By effectively implementing these practices and establishing plants in India, the company achieved a significant milestone. Given our current success, we are actively exploring additional opportunities to further enhance our capacities.

ABB has an internal job market where everyone has the chance to develop new skills and explore different departments. For Kapil, venturing into the MOLM business unleashed a whole new experience. “Back then, my supervisor often advised me to acquire hands-on experience by working on the shop floor, but I didn't grasp the significance then. Now that I’m leading the entire function, my knowledge of how the machines operate has been proven invaluable, as it helps me make decisions more effectively and efficiently.” As a manufacturing engineer, Kapil shouldered significant responsibilities in driving successful operations throughout the years. He played vital roles in establishing new factories, capital investment planning, developing short-term and long-term plans, and training engineers and operators to operate large-scale machinery effectively. 

Despite ABB's substantial growth, its values have remained constant and have been integral to its journey. “Even now, I’m still experiencing the same values that ABB upholds, as everyone, irrespective of whether they have just started or have had years of experience, are given equal chances to explore and find new ways.”

“As I look back on this journey, I express my gratitude for the opportunities ABB has afforded me to learn, grow, and make meaningful contributions to the success of the organization”. Kapil has truly come a long way with ABB. Much like the advice that Kapil abided by since he was young, he urges all youths to follow their dreams, set a goal, focus on achieving it, and they will surely make it one day.
