When Oscar Peralta and his wife packed their bags and moved from Mexico to Poland, the plan was to stay for two years. Ten years later, they are still in Poland, and now have a 3-year-old son. Despite some big cultural differences, they find that Poland feels more and more like home every day. Oscar found his way to ABB when he was directly contacted for an open position. “I received a phone call from ABB and was asked to consider a Team Lead role within Travel & Expenses,” Oscar explains.
The phone call was not the first time he had heard about ABB. A background in engineering led Oscar to work in a factory back in Mexico, making ABB products and gadgets as part of his daily job. “Those three red letters really made an impact – it was a brand that I remembered. And when the job opportunity at ABB was offered to me, it just felt right.”
As the challenge-seeking personality he is, Oscar wasn’t just attracted to the ABB brand. Joining the company meant taking a big leap forward professionally, from managing a team of six people in his previous job, to managing a team of 30 at ABB. A firm believer in continuous learning, Oscar didn’t hesitate to take on the new challenge. “My mentality is to find a way to overcome challenges and learn new things while doing so,” he says.
After five years, Oscar has already made quite the career path for himself at ABB. From two Team Lead positions to a Delivery Manager role, he’s now the Service Owner for Information Systems Finance Domain. In his current role, he works with a lot of complexity – and when dealing with large complexities, things may not always go as planned. Oscar has learned to approach these situations calmly. “There are two types of problems: ones that can be solved, and ones that can’t. If it can be solved, why worry?”
Initially having pursued a career in engineering, Oscar now describes himself as a people leader. When asked about his leadership style, Oscar explains, “I wanted to work as an engineer because I initially wanted to work with non-living things. I had to learn how to work with people, lead them, and understand their feelings. As a leader, I focus on people and their needs.”
With a variety of roles and responsibilities under his belt, Oscar emphasizes the importance of finding the right opportunity. “Find your place at ABB; there are great opportunities and tools for that. Once you find your place, you go to work gladly and time will fly,” he concludes.
