Business Controller – PAEN (Energy Industry)
ABB Vietnam

“By challenging norms, savouring every opportunity, and finding joy in the process, that’s when you’ll uncover what truly suits you best.”

Lien has been in project & business controlling at ABB for over 13 years. She started as a global trainee and is now undertaking her role as the Local Division Controller for Vietnam & Philippines, PAEN business.

Unlike other business controllers, Lien never imagined herself in the finance and accounting sectors. When she was a student, Lien was always puzzled by the complexities of double-entry bookkeeping. “I’ve thought of being a university professor, a manga translator, and even a game tester. I’ve always told my friends that I could do anything, just not in finance and accounting sectors.”

However, everything changed when Lien took on the role of project financial manager for a short-term project in her previous company. The experience ignited her passion for finance and analysis, as she realised that the role aligns perfectly with her character. "As a financial manager, I had to ensure the project's effectiveness and contribute from a strategic perspective. The role felt tailor-made for me," Lien explained. She was then inspired to pursue similar permanent positions in Vietnam, but the role was hard to come by. "Accountant and chief accountant roles were more common back then. I almost gave up on the idea of a career in finance.” Lien’s enthusiasm was reignited when ABB had open positions for postgraduates as global trainees. “During an appointment with the CFO at that time, he spent the whole morning explaining what the job entails, persuading me to accept the offer.” Lien described the job scope as ‘love at first sight’. “I remembered thinking to myself, ‘this is it; this is the one,’ and I’ve been here ever since.”

Lien describes being a business controller as piloting a spaceship without being able to control the steering wheel. “We have access to all the financial data but are not directly involved in operational activities. As business controllers, we would analyse the financial numbers, propose solutions, and translate them into actionable items for the operational teams.” On the other hand, the operational team were described to be driving the spaceship blindfolded. “Their business activities directly impact the business, but they do not have a comprehensive understanding of the financial implications. With one only being able to see the way and the other only being able to steer it, communication and teamwork are crucial for our spaceship to navigate towards the shared target successfully.”

Driven by the desire to tackle new challenges, Lien feels most accomplished when she stands out from the norm. “I see the fun in doing things as a pioneer, things that are not expected of me.” When asked why she enjoys working at ABB, Lien said she values the healthy work environment. “Everyone here is very willing to share. I usually reach out to our Division’s members, and sometimes, other Divisions to discuss and brainstorm solutions.” In addition to the collaborative environment, Lien appreciates the diversity that thrives at ABB. “Being here in this diverse environment has always been fascinating to me. If you point anywhere on the map, chances are, we have one colleague from there. Employees are also given the opportunity to undertake short-term assignments overseas, which enriches their professional growth.”

Outside of work, Lien keeps herself occupied with her two kids. She also fills her time by indulging in home improvement projects, spending time with loved ones, and enjoying contemporary performances. ABB’s commitment to work-life balance is something that Lien values and she constantly reminds herself to strike a balance between both. “In other companies, employees may be expected to work as much as possible, but not in ABB. If I do have to work long hours, I try not to make it a habit and would only do so for a maximum of three days.”

Lien has uncountable accomplishments with ABB, having completed numerous projects, conducted analyses, and revised various policies and procedures. She believes in giving her utmost effort for every task. “I was exposed to the financial part in my first job only because it was the only choice left to be picked. If I were to do the task half-heartedly, I would not have known it would suit me so well. It is when you give your 100%, that you discover what truly resonates with your abilities and passion.”
