Inspiring girls in STEM: Isha’s career story

Meet the people in ABB Ireland, a dynamic team that is making a real difference through being part of a supportive and inclusive work environment where we encourage each other to grow and develop skills, and contribute to impactful work that matters.

Together, we are building a sustainable future for generations to come.

Isha’s journey at ABB shows what it looks like to solve real problems that keep communities powered, grow professionally in a collaborative environment, and inspire the next generation of girls in STEM.

Isha Doshi, Electrical Engineer – R&D, New Zealand
“Since childhood, I’ve been drawn to science and motivated by the idea of making a positive impact on society. There’s a lot happening in the background to make everyday life easier, and as an engineer, you help enable that. You’re solving problems that make a real difference for people, and that really excites me.” In 2018, Isha Doshi moved from India to New Zealand to pursue her master’s degree in engineering. She began her career in a startup, gaining experience across design, customer support, product support, SCADA HMI and testing. Working across different areas helped her build a broad skill set and confidence early in her career.

When she felt ready for a change, ABB stood out as one of the few companies in New Zealand with a local production presence. “ABB has been around for so long. There’s a production unit for the products we supply to the New Zealand and Australian markets, and that really impressed me.” Today, Isha works as an R&D Engineer in the Electrification team in Henderson, focusing mainly on the automation of Ring Main Units (RMUs). Beyond development work, she supports production teams to resolve product issues, prepares documentation and designs for testing gear, and works with customers to troubleshoot and overcome challenges.

Seeing her work out in the real world means a lot to her. “You can see the RMU Distribution units along the roads in New Zealand. It’s great to be able to point at those and tell my friends and family – that’s the company I work for, and we made those units.’”

Isha is the only woman in her engineering team, but she feels well supported and trusted. While she recognises that working in a male-dominated field can come with challenges, she stays focused and lets her work speak for itself.

“Willingness to learn is far more important than perfection. Ask questions, stay curious, and be resilient. If you don’t get it the first time, keep trying. Improvement comes with time.”

Our values are the cornerstone of our culture. They shape everything we do, guide our behavior and interactions with our colleagues, customers, partners and society as a whole, and help us realize our purpose. By living our four ABB values, we lead by example in how we do business and behave.
Learning every day

Before joining ABB, Isha worked on the Auckland City Rail Link project, where she was responsible for designing and testing the web-based HMI SCADA systems with little existing guidance. “Not many people had done it before, so I had to find my own way through it. It was challenging, but it’s an achievement I’m still proud of and often reminisce about.”

At ABB, she continues to learn from colleagues with decades of experience. “There’s a lot more to learn from R&D and production environments. I’m keen to continue strengthening my electrical engineering skills, and sharpening my mechanical engineering skills, from software like SolidWorks to hands-on tools like 3D printing.”

Engineering that supports communities

Through her work on RMU automation, Isha helps ensure that power is delivered safely and reliably to homes and businesses across New Zealand. She encourages girls who are considering a career in STEM to stay curious and keep learning. “Willingness to learn is far more important than perfection. Ask questions, stay curious, and be resilient. If you don’t get it the first time, keep trying. Improvement comes with time.”

A saying that guides her is: “It’s not just your aptitude, but also your attitude that takes you to a greater altitude.” She also shares advice from her own journey. “If science is your interest, trust your perspective and build your knowledge around it. Especially in R&D, it’s incredibly rewarding to see your ideas move from concept to reality, to know that you’re solving meaningful problems and creating real impact through your work.”

Life outside of work

To recharge, Isha spends time in nature, enjoys photography and travel, goes for walks, relaxes at home with her family, and watches movies.
