In the world of engineering, where precision meets innovation, leaders like Ganesh Ghate stand out not just for their technical brilliance, but for their ability to inspire, empower, and transform. With over 17 years at ABB, Ganesh’s journey from a design engineer to leading a 45-member R&D team in Nashik is a powerful example of what purposeful leadership can achieve when it’s rooted in values, vision, and a deep commitment to people.

Ganesh Ghate, Medium Voltage switchgear and CSS-Department Lead at ABB R&D center, India.
From Ahmednagar to ABB: A Journey Rooted in Values
Ganesh’s story begins in the quiet town of Ahmednagar, Maharashtra. The son of a doctor, he was expected to follow in his father’s footsteps. But Ganesh had other plans. He pursued mechanical engineering at the prestigious College of Engineering Pune (COEP), driven by a curiosity to build, design, and innovate. His career began in Bangalore, but the city’s relentless traffic and a desire to be closer to his ailing father led him to ABB in 2008. It was a bold move leaving a Tier 1 city for a Tier 2 town like Nashik. But for Ganesh, it was never about the city. It was about the opportunity to grow, contribute, and live a more balanced life. “Tier 2 cities offer a cleaner, more grounded lifestyle. And when the organization supports your growth, the location becomes a strength, not a limitation,” he reflects.

Building ABB Nashik: From the Ground Up
When Ganesh joined ABB, the Nashik R&D centre was still in its early days. With just 20 engineers, it was a place brimming with potential. Ganesh quickly became a key player in launching SafeLink CB—ABB India’s first fully designed and industrialized product for global markets. That success opened doors for more investment, more talent, and more global projects. From there, he led the technology transfer of the ZX family of primary gas-insulated switchgear from Germany to India, helping transform the Nashik centre into a global innovation hub. Today, it’s not just a regional outpost it’s a strategic contributor to ABB’s global R&D ecosystem.

Leadership That Listens, Empowers, and Evolves
Ganesh’s leadership style is rooted in three core principles: clarity, empathy, and empowerment they’re the foundation of how his team operates every day. He ensures that every team member understands their role in the larger mission. He fosters a culture of psychological safety where people feel free to challenge ideas, propose bold solutions, and take ownership without fear. And he empowers his team by recognizing their strengths, encouraging them to lead, and holding them accountable in a way that builds trust.
Ganesh also deeply aligns with ABB’s four core values: courage, collaboration, curiosity, and care. These values guide his decisions, shape his team culture, and fuel the innovation that drives their work.

“Leadership isn’t just about performance it’s about presence. Being present for your team, your family, and yourself”

Our values are the cornerstone of our culture. They shape everything we do, guide our behavior and interactions with our colleagues, customers, partners and society as a whole, and help us realize our purpose. By living our four ABB values, we lead by example in how we do business and behave.
A Culture of Innovation, Inclusivity, and Global Collaboration
Ganesh has built a team culture that thrives on innovation, inclusivity, and empowerment. His team is encouraged to challenge the status quo, bring fresh ideas to the table, and take bold steps toward solving complex problems.
Regular communication and transparency are key pillars of his leadership. Engineers are given short-term assignments in Europe and other global locations, gaining exposure to international projects and practices. They don’t just learn from global teams they guide them too, sharing insights and expertise from Nashik’s growing innovation hub. “We’re not just solving Indian problems we’re solving global ones. That’s the kind of impact I want my team to have,” Ganesh shares.

Future-Ready Through Sustainability and AI
Ganesh is deeply committed to building a future-ready team. His department is leading the development of SF6-free switchgear products—an initiative that aligns with global environmental goals and ABB’s sustainability mission. Even before regulations in India required it, Ganesh was already pushing for change. “We owe it to the next generation to build cleaner, smarter technologies,” he says. He’s also integrating AI into every layer of R&D—from analysing patents and publications to optimizing simulations and project planning. AI tools help the team reduce design iterations, predict failures, and manage project risks more effectively. Tools like Power BI are used to visualize workloads and streamline decision-making. “We’re not just using AI—we’re building a mindset around it. It’s about working smarter, not harder,” he explains. Ganesh leads by example constantly learning, adapting, and staying ahead of the curve, he ensures his team is on the same path equipped with the tools, exposure, and mindset to thrive in a rapidly evolving world.

A Leader Who Walks the Talk—At Work and At Home
Outside of work, Ganesh is a music lover, a sports enthusiast, and a dedicated family man. He enjoys running his daily 5K jogs are not just a fitness routine but a source of clarity and reflection. Once weighing 83 kg, he transformed his lifestyle through discipline and mindfulness, earning a reputation for health consciousness at ABB. He’s also a proud husband and father, and he values the time he spends with his wife and son. For Ganesh, work-life balance isn’t a luxury it’s a necessity. He encourages his team to prioritize their well-being, spend time with loved ones, and pursue passions outside of work. “Leadership isn’t just about performance it’s about presence. Being present for your team, your family, and yourself,” he says.
