Angie Bak

Senior Sales
Petaling Jaya, Malaysia

“Work-life balance is achievable in ABB. While being dedicated to my career, I can still spend quality time with my children and find joy in pursuing my passion and hobbies.”

In 2017, Angie joined ABB’s robotics division, taking on the role of senior sales. With extensive sales experience in the manufacturing industry, Angie’s tenacious spirit remains that of a hunter, continuously seeking opportunities beyond her comfort zone.

As one of the few women in robotics sales, Angie emphasises the significance of possessing a strong personality. “I am a go-getter and tend to focus on proposing the best outcome for our customers.” Her previous regional role required frequent travelling, which significantly shaped her ‘macho’ personality, as she would describe it. “I remember going door-to-door, offering our company’s product to factories in a foreign country where I don’t speak the language.” With that experience, she was unfazed when she had to frequent production sites in her current role, regardless of the environment. “Site visits are helpful for us to understand customers’ pain points, allowing us to provide them with exceptional customized solutions.”

When asked about essential qualities for success in robotics sales, Angie underscores the value of proactiveness and teamwork. “Waiting for customers to approach you alone is not enough. Self-initiative is important. Moreover, teamwork means going above and beyond to help without being calculative when your team needs you.” She recounts an experience where teamwork and proactiveness helped her team navigate a challenging situation during the pandemic lockdown. “There was a project in progress that I had to hand over. We encountered many restrictions and limitations, where we had to get travel permits and lacked resources and manpower. My contractors and I worked into the night, and utilised whatever supplies we could find. We even resorted to using our work shirts and masks to clean-up.” Despite how tough it was, Angie felt comforted that they overcame the challenge as a team.

Angie’s strength extends beyond her professional accomplishments. As a single mother, she maintains unwavering strength and support for her children. “I gave up my former position, as children grow up fast, and I didn’t want to miss witnessing their growth due to my job. Fortunately, ABB fosters a good work-life balance with flexible working hours, where I can spend more time with my children.” Additionally, Angie finds fulfilment in pursuing her hobbies, which serve as outlets for stress management. “I have always enjoyed dancing since young. I am now a certified Zumba instructor, and still excited about exploring other dance forms. Apart from that, I work out regularly, ensuring I’m in good health to care for my children.”

Mental health is also Angie’s priority as a working mother, and she encourages everyone to adopt the same mindset. “First things first, you need to love yourself. My philosophy is never to allow myself the chance to fall into depression. By loving yourself, you can tap into your inner strength and gain more confidence in your career.”

Angie has since set herself apart by managing different groups of target customers and successfully executing sales strategies. However, her most remarkable achievement to date was being awarded the largest project in Asia within the construction industry, with a sold turnkey system valued at RM12 Million. Her job satisfaction stems from her customers' happiness, recognition, and loyalty. “Even a simple ‘thank you’ is immensely fulfilling for me. Above all, customer loyalty is valuable, as satisfied customers will always return to us to purchase robots.” Angie’s goal is to reach more industries and provide them with support for their manufacturing and automation needs while increasing awareness of ABB’s high-quality products in the Malaysian market.

“I refer to myself as ‘robot woman’, not only because I sell robots, but also because I aspire to be one.” Angie praises ABB for celebrating diversity and inclusion while maintaining a positive work environment. “By hiring women for robotics sales, ABB is paving the way for change in a field where their representation is still relatively rare. Like any other company, working in ABB may be stressful at times, but I find comfort in knowing that I have supportive colleagues and superiors who would work together in achieving common goals.”
