“ABB is a vast platform - don’t be afraid, just keep moving forward. The stage is big enough for you to realize your value and achieve your dreams.”
Meet Jessie Chen, Global R&D Manager for Electrical Solutions. Jessie joined ABB at an early stage of her career and has since navigated her way through various projects with different stakeholders. As a part of the Marine & Ports Career Stories initiative, Jessie gave a glimpse into her career and how mentorship and great advice have altered her journey.
How did you end up working for ABB and what were the early stages of your career like? What do you like most about your job now? I started as an intern at ABB and later became a sales support engineer at Marine & Ports in Shanghai, China. At the early stages of my career, I fostered the skills of curiosity and the willingness to learn new things. Now, I feel really passionate about my career and my job as an engineer, I think it’s cool to be an engineer as a girl. The thing I love most about my job is traveling all over the world!
Reflecting on your career journey within our organization, what pivotal moments or experiences shaped your professional growth the most? Participating in commissioning and sea trials provided me with valuable hands-on experience, allowing me to gain in-depth insights into the operational challenges and nuances of the actual marine industry. The practical exposure at the site not only enhanced my technical knowledge but also gave me a comprehensive understanding of the industry's dynamic environment, safety protocols, and the coordination required between various stakeholders during real-world maritime operations. What role has mentorship played in your career development, and do you have any memorable mentorship experiences you'd like to share? One of the people who have been inspiring me the most is Dr Alf Kare Adnanes. He was the supervisor of my PhD program which was sponsored by ABB and the Singapore government. The best advice I have ever received was when he convinced me to join ABB by saying: “studying can be done at any time, but great career opportunities are not always readily available”. I took his advice and joined ABB as my first job. During my journey, I have also been mentored by several other professionals within ABB. The way I find and connect with my mentors is by showing initiative and seeking advice on projects and career development. That way I have been naturally building these relationships.
How do you continue learning & growing as a professional? How do you approach continuous learning and skill development in an ever-evolving industry like maritime? I pursued my PhD after working at ABB for about 8 years. The program was sponsored by ABB and the Singapore government. Earning this degree was essential to keeping my skills sharp and relevant, ensuring continued growth. Additionally, I have been involved in collaborative projects with various teams, including sales, project management, service, and product R&D. Working with different stakeholders has exposed me to diverse perspectives and methodologies, driving me to continually adapt and improve.
Reflecting on your career, what advice would you give to your younger self? ABB is a vast platform - don’t be afraid, just keep moving forward. The stage is big enough for you to realize your value and achieve your dreams.
What advice do you have for someone new to the industry? It’s a great industry for young professionals to develop their careers. If possible, visit a site to see how the industry operates today, and then come back with fresh ideas to contribute.
