Diversity has always been a cornerstone of Vanessa’s worldview. Born and raised in Malaysia’s oldest city renowned for its rich multicultural history, Vanessa comes from a small Eurasian community of mixed European and Asian ancestry. Armed with a master’s degree in chemical engineering, Vanessa’s unassuming demeanor led her to her current role as a technical and design promotion specialist in ABB’s Electrification business. As the only woman in the Technical and Promotion team, Vanessa encounters a common misconception from clients who assume that she works in sales. “Once I clarify that I’m part of the business development team, there’s a brief pause before they ask technical questions,” she explains. “It’s rewarding to witness their perspective shift when I provide informed answers.”
Despite challenges, Vanessa is undeterred. She firmly believes in embracing her femininity while forging ahead in her chosen career path. “Engineering will remain male-dominated, but that doesn’t mean that we have to adopt masculine traits to fit in. It’s perfectly acceptable to be a woman and to take pride in our identity.”
