Tom’s story

Tom Hakizinka Senga loves to solve problems. In his internship at ABB he was able to play a part in solving one of the biggest problems of all – reaching Net Zero.

Tom Hakizinka Senga has always been curious about how things work. It’s what drove him to pursue a Mechanical Engineering degree in the first place. “I love solving problems, and I’m particularly curious about what it takes to make great products” explains Tom.

Tom currently studies at Dundalk Institute of Technology, and is expected to graduate in the summer of 2025. His internship at ABB gave him a wealth of new experiences that he’s eager to apply elsewhere. “For me it was a year of firsts – and I hope my degree might bring me another!”

“At ABB I worked on a wide variety of different tasks. I gained experience in prototyping where I redesigned, and 3D printed some components to remove any imperfections. I was also in charge of making a prototype base for testing a sensor.”

“My biggest achievement” says Tom, “Was that I got to share my prototype drawing with a manufacturer and build the actual prototype. It was my first time doing anything like this, and it was an experience I’ll never forget”.

This wasn’t the only first Tom experienced: “I also got to draft a quality analysis report, which is a document that will be used to assess whether the parts sourced by ABB from their supplier meet ABB specifications. The document I helped create will be used in the main factory in China, which is incredible to think about.”

During his time with ABB, Tom also came to understand how solving small problems day-to-day helps with the bigger picture. “I got the chance to contribute to a life cycle analysis that’s being performed on all ABB products released for the pulp & paper industry here in Dundalk. Each and every product has its own part to play in improving efficiency, and facilitating the energy transition. Having the opportunity to see how this all fits into ABB’s strategy to achieve Net Zero by 2030, and participating in the auditing stage, has been genuinely insightful.”

“There’s far too many experiences to list them all here” concludes Tom, “But they’ve all helped to equip me with invaluable knowledge that I’m already applying back at the college in the modules I’m studying, as well as with my final year project”.
