For Maitsetseg Ravdandorj, every working day at ABB brings something new. As an Application Engineer based in Mannheim, Germany, she works at the intersection of customers, technology, and collaboration, transforming technical requirements into practical solutions that make a real difference.

Maitsetseg joined ABB in 2018 after first discovering the company as an intern during her studies. Her internship — which included time in both Germany and Sweden — opened the door to an international career that matched her ambitions. Today, she is part of a team of eight application engineers in Germany who work closely with colleagues around the world to support customers and develop tailored solutions. “Our role is to provide technical support to customers and work closely with sales colleagues to find the best solution,” she explains. “Every customer has different requirements and applications, so every day is different.”

Turning customer needs into practical solutions
Maitsetseg’s work spans a wide range of industries, including automation, renewable energy, and heavy industry. She regularly travels to customer sites, spending about half her working time in the field to better understand operating conditions and technical challenges. This hands-on approach helps ensure that solutions are practical and effective.

Understanding customer needs is at the heart of her work — and collaboration plays a crucial role. Maitsetseg works closely with sales teams, mechanical and electrical engineers, and global colleagues to turn customer requirements into technical solutions. One example was a project to develop new safety-related functions for crane drives. Working together with colleagues in Germany and Spain, the team created new features that automatically adjust drive speed depending on load and safely reduce speed when limits are reached. “The sales colleagues help us understand the customer’s needs, and we translate those into technical solutions,” she says. “In the end, we create the perfect solution together.”

After the solution was developed, Maitsetseg traveled to Spain to test it on-site with the customer. The project took only a few weeks from development to commissioning and resulted in a solution that fully met the customer’s requirements.

Collaboration that creates global impact
What started as a local solution soon had a global impact. After returning to Germany, Maitsetseg shared the results through ABB’s internal communication channel. Colleagues from multiple countries quickly reached out with interest in using the new functionality with their own customers. “I didn’t expect that,” she says. “It showed me that even small things like sharing knowledge can have a big impact.”

“Even small things like sharing knowledge can have a big impact.”

Our values are the cornerstone of our culture. They shape everything we do, guide our behavior and interactions with our colleagues, customers, partners and society as a whole, and help us realize our purpose. By living our four ABB values, we lead by example in how we do business and behave.
Knowledge sharing and communication are key themes in Maitsetseg’s work. She believes transparent collaboration helps teams avoid duplicated work and drives faster innovation across ABB’s global organization. “It’s meaningful work to support one another and understand how technical requirements vary by country,” she explains.

Supporting the energy transition – and the next generation
Beyond customer projects, Maitsetseg has also contributed to initiatives that support the energy transition. She worked with various colleagues and teams to help certify ABB drives for renewable energy applications. These certifications allow customers to safely connect renewable energy systems to public grids and feed clean energy back into the network. “This project makes me proud because it supports clean energy,” she says.

Continuous learning is another important part of her journey. Maitsetseg actively participates in ABB’s internal communities, including an AI community where employees learn about new technologies and digital transformation. She also uses AI tools in her daily work, improving efficiency and freeing up time to focus on problem-solving and creative tasks.

What motivates her most is the opportunity to work with people from different countries and backgrounds while solving real challenges together. At the same time, she hopes to see more women entering technical roles in the future. Often the only woman on customer sites or in technical environments, she wants to help encourage more girls and young women to pursue engineering careers.

To support this, ABB Mannheim has already introduced initiatives like Girls’ Day. “They invite girls here for one day to learn more about the technical field, to give them an inside look through company introductions and workshops. I really like it.”

For Maitsetseg, being a Runmaker means combining technical expertise with collaboration and curiosity, turning customer needs into solutions that drive industrial impact and support a more sustainable future.
