Intern Spotlight: Nakyah

Nakyah Vaughan

Sales Engineer | Cary, USA
"The most memorable moment for me was the first Friday of my internship, which also happened to be my birthday. It was my first birthday away from home, and everyone made sure I felt seen and included.”
What is your main field of study? Why did you choose to study this field? When will you graduate?
I am a Computer Science major with a minor in Human Computing Interactions. I chose this field because of my passion for technology and my interest in how software can solve real-world problems. Additionally, I am particularly drawn to fintech and AI ethics, and I aspire to create inclusive spaces in tech. I am expected to graduate in Spring 2026.

When did you start your internship and what made you join ABB? What was your first impression after joining?
I started my internship in May 2024. I joined ABB after experiencing the wonderful culture the company provides during my participation in ABB's first US cohort of their Sustainable Talent Program. Everyone here is incredibly nice, and I felt immediately welcomed and part of the family.

What are your typical tasks? What kind of projects have you been working on?
So far, my typical tasks include meeting with my managers and others we work closely with. I'm responsible for a multitude of reports, which involve using Salesforce, Power BI, and a lot of Excel. You could say I am an Excel champion now! Additionally, I am helping with onboarding for one of our digital platforms, ensuring a smooth transition for new users. These tasks have given me valuable hands-on experience in managing digital solutions and customer opportunities.

What has been the most memorable moment for you during your time with ABB? Is there any specific event or meeting that stands out?
I think the most memorable moment for me was the first Friday of my internship, which also happened to be my birthday. It was my first birthday away from home, and everyone made sure I felt seen and included. During our first meeting with Norm Sowards, CMO, we had cupcakes to celebrate. Later that night, the Discovery Leads and the office interns got together to celebrate my birthday. It was also one of the Discovery Leads birthday, and she was so kind to share her party with me after just one week of knowing me. This experience made my birthday special and highlighted the supportive and welcoming culture at ABB.
