CAREERS THAT EVOLVE: ENA MUKHERJEE'S JOURNEY AT ABB
Meet the people in ABB Ireland, a dynamic team that is making a real difference through being part of a supportive and inclusive work environment where we encourage each other to grow and develop skills, and contribute to impactful work that matters.
Together, we are building a sustainable future for generations to come.
Together, we are building a sustainable future for generations to come.
Ena Mukherjee’s story at ABB reminds us of something important: that powerful careers aren’t defined by constant momentum they’re shaped by the experiences, transitions, and choices that make someone grow.

When Career Paths Take Unexpected Turns
Building Something Real Across Different Worlds
Ena started her journey as a developer in energy and utilities a world of legacy systems and deep technical work. She moved into business analysis, then product-focused roles across steel manufacturing, finance, and IT. Each transition demanded something different: unlearning old systems, building new skills, stepping into unfamiliar territory.
Today, as a Technical Product Manager at ABB, she works at the intersection where technology, strategy, and people meet contributing to the kind of innovation that defines ABB’s impact across industries. Her approach isn’t just about building systems. It’s about connecting teams, enabling collaboration, and driving real-world outcomes through human understanding.
"A career doesn't need to move in a straight line to be powerful. It only needs the space to pause, return, and grow"
"A career doesn't need to move in a straight line to be powerful. It only needs the space to pause, return, and grow"
Our values are the cornerstone of our culture. They shape everything we do, guide our behavior and interactions with our colleagues, customers, partners and society as a whole, and help us realize our purpose. By living our four ABB values, we lead by example in how we do business and behave.
Rebuilding Momentum After a Pause
Career pauses often come with questions that linger quietly in the background.
Will I still be good at this?
Will I remember how to do the work?
For many professionals, stepping away can trigger self-doubt skills feel distant, confidence wavers, and re-entry feels daunting. She views this differently. “Tools may change. Roles may evolve.
But the knowledge you carry forward continues to shape meaningful work.”
For her, confidence isn’t lost during a career break it’s rebuilt through trust. Through opportunity. Through environments that don’t reduce people to timelines or gaps.
What matters most isn’t acceleration. It’s having the space to regain your rhythm without pressure, judgment, or fear.
Finding the Right Environment
While ABB has initiatives such as Unpaused that support structured career returns, it’s important to note that Ena joined as a regular hire, not through the program. She describes ABB’s culture as one that looks beyond linear timelines and truly sees potential an organization that supports people through life transitions, whether that’s returning after time away, stepping into leadership for the first time, or redefining what a career can look like.
ABB also offers structured Women Development Programs (WDP) aimed at supporting learning, leadership readiness, and career progression. While Ena has not yet participated in a WDP herself, she sees these programs as a strong indicator of ABB’s broader investment in developing diverse talent.
That support shows up as flexibility, psychological safety, and genuine encouragement to take on new challenges. At ABB, leadership is grounded in respect. Knowledge is shared freely. And people are trusted to learn, take risks, and grow at their own pace in an environment where technology and human potential go hand in hand.
Mentorship and Growth at Every Stage
Mentorship has been a cornerstone of Ena’s journey.
At ABB, she found not only space to grow herself, but also opportunities to support others helping colleagues navigate transitions, rebuild confidence, and recognize strengths they sometimes doubt.
She believes the most impactful leaders are those who’ve navigated change themselves.
They understand uncertainty, they adapt, they see the bigger picture.
Ena’s own evolution from deep technical work in legacy systems to strategic leadership is proof of what’s possible when workplaces actively invest in people, not just roles.
A Shift in How We Think About Progress
As conversations around careers continue to evolve, stories like Ena’s remind us of something essential:
Stories like Ena’s point to something larger: that the most resilient organizations are the ones that invest in people over the long arc of a career not just at the point of hire. At ABB, that investment is visible in the technology people get to work on, the leaders who make space for growth, and the culture that encourages people to bring their full experience to the table. For Ena, the next chapter is already underway and it’s one she’s helping to write for others too.
