Powering operations behind the scenes

Meet the people in ABB Ireland, a dynamic team that is making a real difference through being part of a supportive and inclusive work environment where we encourage each other to grow and develop skills, and contribute to impactful work that matters.

Together, we are building a sustainable future for generations to come.

A small detail can sometimes shape an entire career. From noticing ABB breakers during a summer internship to leading a specialized engineering data team more than a decade later, Cecilia Rojas’s journey shows how curiosity and openness can turn a chance encounter into a lasting professional path.

Cecilia Rojas, Material Master & IT Coordinator, Mexico
Cecilia Rojas first came across ABB through a small detail. During a summer internship in a food manufacturing plant in Mexico, she noticed small breakers inside the equipment on the production line – each one carrying the ABB name. The brand caught her attention.

Later, while studying Mechatronics Engineering, Cecilia attended a university career fair. When she saw the ABB logo again, she remembered those little breakers from her summer internship. She decided to apply for an internship – without really knowing how large the company was or how widely its technology was used. “I just thought, let’s give it a try and see what happens,” she recalls. It seemed meant to be when she was invited to interview for the internship position. “I still didn’t know too much about the company until I had an interview with the hiring manager and saw the campus. It was huge,” Cecilia says with a smile. Visiting the ABB campus for the first time made a lasting impression.

The decision to join ABB as an intern turned into a long-term journey. Cecilia started her first internship in 2013 and became a full-time employee the following year. Today, more than a decade later, she leads a specialized team at the ABB San Luis Potosí facility, where she works at the intersection of engineering systems, data, and process improvement.

From engineering intern to team leader
Cecilia’s career path at ABB evolved quickly. She first supported project management activities, helping prepare shipment documentation for medium-voltage switchgear. Soon after, she moved to the engineering side, where she began working with bills of materials and part numbers for R&D projects. That experience sparked an unexpected passion. “I discovered that I really enjoyed understanding how the system works,” Cecilia says. “Not just the product design, but how everything connects in the ERP system.” Today, she leads a team of six employees and an intern responsible for managing material master data in SAP and developing digital tools that support engineering processes at the San Luis Potosí plant.

Her leadership role became a reality in 2021, but guiding others always came naturally. “I’ve always liked helping people find the right path,” she explains. “That’s something I enjoy about leading a team.” For Cecilia, leadership also means building strong relationships. She prioritizes regular one-on-one conversations with team members – not to discuss performance metrics or results, but simply to check in on how they are doing on a personal level.

“We’ve created an environment where everyone supports each other.
That’s something I’m very proud of.”

Our values are the cornerstone of our culture. They shape everything we do, guide our behavior and interactions with our colleagues, customers, partners and society as a whole, and help us realize our purpose. By living our four ABB values, we lead by example in how we do business and behave.
Turning data into better decisions
One of Cecilia’s proudest achievements is the creation of what she calls a digital ecosystem. Developed together with her manager, the initiative connects SAP data with Power BI dashboards, transforming complex operational data into clear visual insights. The system allows teams across the plant to monitor processes covering multiple areas – planning, engineering, procurement, supply chain management, inventory, and warehouse – and quickly identify potential issues.

The idea started with a simple goal: to make it easier for employees to understand what the system is telling them. “I didn’t know much about Power BI in the beginning,” Cecilia says. “But we learned how to connect it to SAP and create something that empowers people to make decisions in their day-to-day work.” The impact becomes clear when the system temporarily stops working. “We would immediately start getting complaints that it wasn’t available,” she laughs. “These are the moments when we realize people are using it more than we thought.” Although originally designed for the San Luis Potosí plant, the concept could potentially be replicated across other ABB facilities.

The hidden impact behind reliable power
Much of Cecilia’s work happens behind the scenes. Her team focuses on maintaining accurate engineering data, materials, bill of materials, and others – work that rarely attracts attention but is critical for smooth operations. “If you change something as small as a screw in the bill of materials, it can affect the entire production process,” she explains. By keeping engineering data clean and consistent, her team prevents costly mistakes on the factory floor. “It’s the kind of impact nobody sees,” Cecilia says. “But it keeps everything running.”

When people ask what ABB does, she often explains it through everyday examples. Hospitals, shopping centers, and cities all rely on reliable electricity, something ABB technology helps make possible. “All professions are connected in ways we don’t always realize,” she concludes.

For Cecilia, that quiet but meaningful impact is what makes the work worthwhile – and what motivates her and her team to keep improving the systems that keep ABB’s operations running smoothly.
