Työkaverit rikastuttavat koko elämää

Anusta ja Laurasta tuli kollegoita noin 15 vuotta sitten, kun he työskentelivät silloisen Vaasan Product Support -yksikön aftersales-palveluiden prosessinomistajina. ”Oli hienoa päästä kehittämään tuotteiden elinkaaripalveluita yhteistyössä eri asiantuntijoiden kanssa ja luoda varaosa-, takuu- ja korjausprosessiin toimintamalli työohjeineen”, releiden maailmaan perehtyneet energiset ekspertit kertovat.

Anu oli tullut taloon oppisopimuksella suojareleiden korjaamolle, jossa hän hoiti saapuvien ja lähtevien toimitusten logistiikkaa. Helsingissä kasvanut Laura taas oli valmistunut Haaga-Helia ammattikorkeakoulusta tehtyään BBA-tutkinnon lopputyön ennakkohuoltopalvelumarkkinoinnista ja päätynyt kesäharjoittelijaksi samalle osastolle Anun kanssa.

”Rekrytoiva esimies toimi nopeasti ja palkkasi minut suoraan haastattelusta kesätöihin Vaasaan. Olin hakenut ABB:lle myös Helsinkiin, mistä soitettiinkin tunnin kuluttua, mutta oli jo myöhäistä”, Laura nauraa muistolle, joka sinetöi hänen kohtalonsa. ”Sillä tiellä olen edelleen. Olen saanut haastaa ja kehittää itseäni täällä monissa erilaisissa tehtävissä. Siinä sivussa olen saanut kolme lasta – sekä nämä mahtavat ystävät elämääni”, Vaasassa viihtyvä Laura toteaa. ”Kun täällä tutustut johonkin, se on sitten loppuelämän juttu.”

Uteliaisuudella ja rohkeasti uutta kohti

ABB tukee jatkuvaa oppimista työssä ja opintojen parissa. Muun muassa prosessin omistajana ja esimiestehtävissä työskennellyt Anu on opiskellut töiden ohessa VAMKissa BBA- ja MBA-tutkinnot – ja saanut niin ikään kolme lasta.

"On ollut hienoa voida opiskella töiden ja perheen ohessa ja saada kehittää itseään sitäkin kautta”, nykyään tuotetehtaan huolinnassa asiantuntijana toimiva Anu kiittää.

Tuotteiden ympärillä monenlaista kehitystyötä

Kolmikosta Elina oli valmistunut VAMKista IT-puolen insinööriksi, kun hän reilu kymmenen vuotta sitten aloitti Lauran äitiysloman sijaisena. Tätä ennen hän oli ollut reletehtaan tuotannossa kesätöissä ja jatkanut siellä tuntiharjoittelijana opiskelujen ohessa. Tehtyään opinnäytetyön ABB:lle Elina aloitti varaosaprosessin omistajana. Anu ja Elina ystävystyivät perehdytyksen parissa. Myöhemmin Elina tutustui myös äitiyslomalta palanneeseen Lauraan, ja ystävyys on kantanut sieltä saakka.

”Nykyisin työskentelen järjestelmäasiantuntijana Electrification Servicessä Vaasassa. Olen lähes koko ABB-urani toiminut B2B Online -sovellusten parissa erilaisissa projekteissa ja järjestelmäkehityksessä”, Elina kertoo.

Distribution Solutions tuotetehdas ja Electrification Service ovat aina toimineet läheisessä yhteistyössä. Niinpä naisetkin ovat vaihtaneet tehtäviä sujuvasti puolelta toiselle, ja samalla on voitu hyödyntää eri puolilta saatuja oppeja. "Olemme saaneet kehittää palveluita ja prosesseja, tiedonsiirtoa ja tiedonkulkua”, naiset toteavat.

”Esimerkiksi tuotteen elinkaaren hallinta ja palvelutuotekonseptien kehitys ovat olleet valtavan kiinnostavia asioita”, Laura jatkaa. ”Nykyisessä roolissani kehityspäällikkönä tuotetehtaalla kehitän toimintojamme asiakaskokemuksen parantamiseksi. Tuote on tärkeä, mutta myös sen ympärillä olevat asiat vaikuttavat paljon asiakaskokemukseen”, tällä hetkellä palvelumuotoilunäkökulmalla asiakkaiden tarpeita tutkiva Laura painottaa.

Ihmiset ovat kaiken keskiössä

Työkaveruus on kasvanut ystävyydeksi. Naiset ovat tavanneet vuosikaudet vapaa-ajallaankin tiiviisti, muun muassa urheilun, naisteniltojen ja myös lomamatkojen merkeissä. Toki poikkeusaikana on pitänyt keksiä vähän uudenlaisia ajanviettokeinoja. Anu on myös Elinan lapsen kummitäti, mikä osaltaan kertoo ystävyyden merkityksestä ja sitoutumisen asteesta. Kaveruus jatkuu myös seuraavassa sukupolvessa: Elinan ja Lauran samanikäiset pojat ovat ystävyksiä.

”Toisiaan tukevat kollegat työssä ja vapaa-ajalla ovat tärkeä voimavara. Sillä on ihan uskomaton merkitys, kun voi jakaa asioita ja saa tukea”, Elina sanoo. ”Viimeisen parin vuoden aikana tämä on tietysti vielä korostunut.”

”Ja jos vielä saat työkavereista sydänystäviä, mikäs sen mahtavampaa. Olen monesti ajatellut, että minulla on niin mahtavat työkaverit, etten voi täältä minnekään lähteä. Myös Vaasan yliopiston ja isojen yritysten tuoma kansainvälisyys ovat plussaa kaupungille", Laura listaa.

Kolmikolla on katse kirkkaasti eteenpäin ja sammumaton tahto kehittyä aina vain lisää. Kun pohditaan tärkeimpiä asioita töissä, ystävykset toteavat: ”Osaamisena kehittämisen lisäksi on ollut hienoa tutustua monien alojen ammattilaisiin – ABB:llä on vaan niin hyvää porukkaa ja osaavia tyyppejä. Ihmisistä saa energiaa päivään ja huumori kantaa kaikessa."

About 15 years ago, Anu and Laura became colleagues when they worked as process owners in the Vaasa Product Support unit’s aftersales services. “It’s been great to be able to develop product lifecycle services in cooperation with various experts and to create an operating model with work instructions for spare parts, warranty and repair processes,” explain the energetic experts from the world of relays.

Anu arrived as an apprenticeship to the protection relay repair shop, where she handled the logistics of incoming and outgoing deliveries. Laura, who grew up in Helsinki, graduated from the Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences after completing her BBA in preventive maintenance services marketing, and ended up as a summer trainee in the same department as Anu.

“The recruiting manager acted quickly and hired me straight from my interview to a summer job in Vaasa. I had also applied to ABB in Helsinki and they called me about an hour later, but it was too late,” laughs Laura at the memory that sealed her fate. “I’m still on this path. I’ve been able to challenge and develop myself here in various positions. At the same time, I’ve had three children – and made these great friends in my life,” says Laura, who enjoys her time in Vaasa. “When you make a friend here, it’s a friend for life.”

With curiosity and courage toward new challenges

ABB supports continuous learning in work and studies. Among other things, Anu, who has worked as a process owner and supervisor, has studied at VAMK for her BBA and MBA degrees – and has also had three children.

“It’s been great to be able to study alongside my work and having a family and to be able to develop myself through this,” says Anu, who is now an expert in product factory maintenance.

A wide range of development with products

Of the trio, Elina graduated from VAMK as an IT engineer, when she took up Laura’s position for her maternity leave more than ten years ago. Prior to this, she had worked in the relay factory during summer, and continued there as an hourly intern during her studies. After completing the final thesis for ABB, Elina started as a spare parts process owner. Anu and Elina became friends during orientation. Later, Elina also got to know Laura, who had returned from her maternity leave, and the friendship has lasted ever since.

“I currently work as a systems expert at Electrification Service in Vaasa. For almost all of my entire ABB career, I’ve worked with B2B Online applications in various projects, and with system development,” says Elina.

The Distribution Solutions product factory and Electrification Service have always worked closely together. Thus, the three women have also been able to change jobs smoothly from one side to the other, and at the same time they have managed to draw on the lessons learned from the various sides. “We’ve been able to develop services and processes, data transfers and information flows,” conclude the women.

“For example, product lifecycle management and the development of service product concepts have been tremendously interesting,” continues Laura. “In my current role as development manager at the product factory, I’ve been developing our operations to improve the customer experience. The product is important, but the issues around it also affect the customer experience a lot,” says Laura, who is currently studying customers’ needs from a service design perspective.

People are at the heart of everything

Co-workers have grown into friends. Even in their spare time, these women have met often for many years, for sports, girls nights out, holidays and so on. Of course, in the exceptional Covid period, we have had to come up with a few new ways of entertaining ourselves. Anu is also godmother to Elina’s child, which in turn shows the importance of friendship and the degree of commitment. Friendships also cross generations: Elina and Laura have sons the same age, who are also friends.

“Mutually supportive colleagues at work and leisure are an important resource. It’s incredibly important when you can share things and get support,” states Elina. “Over the last few years, of course, this has become even more pronounced.”

“And if you become close friends with your co-workers, what’s better? I’ve often thought that I have such great colleagues that I can’t leave here. The international atmosphere brought by the University of Vaasa and large companies is also a plus for the city,” adds Laura to the list of positives.

The trio look optimistically to the future, and have an unquenchable will to develop more and more. When thinking about the most important things at work, the friends say: “In addition to competence development, it’s been great to get to know professionals in many fields – ABB has such a good and skilled team. People give energy for the day and humor supports everything.”
