Kingsley David, PMP

Research and Development Team Manager
Bangalore, India

“Continuous learning is a fundamental aspect of ABB’s culture. One of the factors that retained me at ABB is the availability of open platforms offering ample opportunities to upgrade skills, not only within the same field but also in various areas of interest.”

"Kingsley began his career as an Instrumentation Engineer at a well-known firm within the Pulp and Paper industry, where ABB, a global leader in Control Systems, was one of their clients. 'I was fascinated by the work in Process Control systems at ABB, and a few years later, I had the opportunity to join ABB in 2006 as a Product Analyst in the Process Automation division.' He currently holds the position of R&D Team Manager. "My journey with ABB, spanning over 18 years, has been remarkable, characterized by continuous learning, enjoyment, and numerous opportunities for both professional and personal development."

Kingsley is a staunch advocate of ABB's work culture, emphasizing that "Collaboration, one of ABB’s core values, is indispensable when working with large, global teams from countries such as Sweden, United States, Germany, Norway, China, and Poland." He appreciates the support from colleagues worldwide, noting their willingness to adjust to different time zones to ensure timely project completion and adherence to customer commitments. "For the customer, we are all one ABB, even though internally, we are various groups and divisions under the ABB umbrella."

Kingsley is a certified Project Management Professional from the Project Management Institute (PMI) and actively contributes as a volunteer in various PMI forums. This certification has played a key role in his career, enabling him to manage global projects and teams effectively, while catering stakeholders from countries such as the United States, Norway, Finland, Germany, Poland, China, Italy, and more.

"I derive great satisfaction from engaging with people, understanding team members’ aspirations, and aligning them with project deliverables to ensure mutual professional and personal growth. This approach fosters a strong, committed team, ready to tackle challenges and thrive. Leading the team in developing the IEC61850 (Electrical) protocol provided me with valuable insights into team dynamics and various aspects of management and leadership."

Continuous learning is a fundamental aspect of ABB’s culture. One of the factors that retain Kingsley at ABB is the availability of open platforms offering ample opportunities to upgrade skills, not only within the same field but also in various areas of interest.

Transitioning from a core technical engineer role, which involved strict procedures and stringent processes, to software development, which demands a more flexible approach, was initially challenging. 'I learned a profound lesson: to be ready to unlearn and relearn. This mindset has fueled my growth and progress. Embracing progress over perfection has been pivotal to my career success."

When asked about an interesting project, Kingsley responded, "I was fortunate to be part of the teams that developed ABB's Digital platform to address common digital needs across businesses. Teams worldwide collaborated despite the rapid evolution of new technology. I was part of the team that introduced and streamlined many processes and focused on the ‘Program Increment Plan,’ where team members from all regions planned activities for the subsequent three months and delivered completed features accordingly. As part of the review team, I ensured effective and efficient deliveries as per schedule. This initiative was highly successful, thanks to the support from management, mentors, and external training sessions, which provided insights leading to professional and personal development."

Another notable project was post-Covid, involving the relocation of a lab from one office location to another. One of the key objectives was to minimize downtime, thereby reducing the impact on the project. "I was entrusted with full responsibility for one of the Division labs, and with the necessary support from various ABB teams, I successfully set up the lab within the committed deadlines, ensuring its availability for project use. This project was particularly interesting due to the involvement of numerous external stakeholders and authorities, which introduced multiple risks that had to be anticipated and mitigated. It was crucial for the systems to function smoothly and support remote interfaces within the timeline."

"The term 'fantastic' aptly encapsulates Kingsley's entire experience at ABB, highlighting some of the aspects he values: 'I take immense pride in successfully achieving the goals I am committed to, maintaining focus on the North Star, the broader vision, to stay aligned with the set objectives and work dedicatedly towards them. To continue progressing, there are numerous open platforms and internal training sessions, both technical and leadership-oriented, available for individual or teams learning and development. Additionally, employees have the opportunity to transfer between departments through the internal open job market."

Kingsley takes pride in volunteering as an expert for various educational and non-profit organizations, sharing his knowledge to help students advance in the tech field. His advice: remain with one organization, thoroughly learn the domain, and strive to become an expert. While technology evolves, core domain knowledge remains constant.
